Hiring our (Super)Heroes

At Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS), we believe military personnel make great employees and we invite you to apply to both our instructional and non-instructional career opportunities.  There are many reasons we look to hire veterans but at the heart of all our hiring decisions is our students.  Are you ready to serve our youth?

Here are just a few of the reasons we want you to join Team CMS:

  • Veterans are trained in teamwork and leadership. These transferable skills enhance the culture and productivity of CMS.

  • CMS values diversity. Veterans have the sensitivity to cooperate with many different types of individuals and recognize the contributions and unique perspectives of each person.

  • We are a state organization with rules and regulations that we must follow. Military service men and women understand the importance of procedure.

  • Grace Under Pressure - It takes a hero to stand in front of a kindergarten class of 20 six year olds (and some self-sacrifice).

Career Counseling and Referral Services

Retired Active Duty and Selected Reserve may qualify for financial assistance.

All current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to participate in the Troops to Teachers (TTT) program. The last period of military service must be characterized as honorable. TTT provides counseling and, for those who are eligible for hire as teachers, referral services to assist with the transition to the classroom. Counseling includes discussion of path options considering education level, referral to appropriate IHEs that offer teacher education programs applicable to the individual’s interest and geography. Additionally, unofficial transcript, résumé and cover letter reviews are available in North Carolina. We also have volunteer mentors available in many areas for observational experiences.

The region is composed of 16 counties, including four counties in South Carolina, with the city of Charlotte serving as the hub. Located in the heart of the Southeast, Charlotte lies within the southern Piedmont of North Carolina, along the state’s border with South Carolina. Charlotte is the largest and most accessible city between Washington, D.C., and Dallas, Texas. Due to its mid-Atlantic location, getting to Charlotte is easy from anywhere in the country or the world, hence its nickname "the International Gateway to the South."   Click the picture above for more information about our great city!

Employee Testmonials

Joining the US Army as a Military Police Officer upon graduation from High School in 1982 set in motion events that have defined me, as a person, since. Serving my country and fellow citizens has been and still is a driving force in my life. The concept of service to others led me to be an educator. I have gone from arresting one offender at a time in the Army to  making a difference one student at a time.

-Michael Pillsbury

As a Reservist I have a commitment to my country and at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools I impact and serve my local community.  It's a win-win.  The military has given me the confidence and skills needed to succeed in my work at CMS.
